Norte

In my paintings, I invite the viewer to reconsider the spatial and psychological possibilities of familiar environments. Like in Medieval tapestries where there is tension between the pictorial depth and the flatness of the woven surfaces, my paintings hover in a similar duality. The imagery in this grouping has a northern association. In the New York City landscapes, this reference is obvious. In the other paintings, most of the imagery is inspired by the architectural details, the furniture and color of homes, and outdoor settings from New England and Northern California in the United States. By manipulating perspective and infusing the paintings with detail, I create visual tableaus that playfully distort and simultaneously recall familiar settings. My paintings border on the voyeuristic yet are reverential depictions of places. They are based on reality, yet they evolve into spaces with a personality of their own that engulf the observer in a luminous concert of color and warmth.
